Listen up, because we’re about to uncover the historical roots and modern-day duties of the maid of honor.

Back then, the maid of honor wasn’t just a hype woman for the bride—she was the ultimate wing-woman, dressed in a copy of the bride’s threads, ready to confuse any lurking evil spirits or would-be bride snatchers. Plus, she was the MVP when it came to pre-wedding prep, helping the bride get dolled up and even weaving flower wreaths together to ward off any bad luck or lingering spirits.
Fast forward to today, where our trusty maid of honor still rocks the role of protector and supporter, though the threats are less otherworldly and more… troublesome ex’s trying to crash the party. The Ultimate Maid of Honor Checklist:
Alright, let’s break it down the main duties you’ll be performing before and during the wedding:
Bridesmaid’s dresses: You’ll help choose the style and color of the dresses for the bridesmaids and help ensure that every lady is fully kitted out and fitted before the big day.
The Bridal Shower: You’ll help plan the bridal shower, often in tandem with the mother of the Bride or Groom.
The Bachelorette Party: Work with the bride to know what she’s hoping to do (Dinner and a show? Bar hopping? A formal tea party and luncheon?) then get it planned with help from the rest of the bridesmaids.
Be Present: You should attend all prewedding events possible to show your support. From the wedding party, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, dress shopping, and more!
Be her Rock: Be there to provide emotional support to the bride during the planning process. It’s a lot to do for one person, but she’ll get through it all with grace with you there by her side!
Go-between: Be the messenger between the bride and groom before the ceremony to preserve the magic of the first look.
Day-of Support: Help the bride on the wedding day with dressing, makeup, hair, emotional support, going to the bathroom, bustling the train, or whatever else she needs.
Medic: Know where the emergency kit is and be ready to use it for the bridal party or bride. Wield that moleskin like a shield to help prevent any sores from pretty shoes!
Day of Coordinator: You will work with the Day of Coordinator or BE the Day of Coordinator if needed to help make sure everything is running on time from the photos to the toasts. But we recommend doing what you can to focus on the bride first of all and using your fellow bridesmaids to run errands.
First Bridesmaid: You’ll lead the bridesmaids, so the bride doesn’t need to. Making sure there’s no fighting or tension, that everyone is dressed appropriately and ready for the ceremony, and keeping the group organized.
Lead by Example: Be an example to all other guests by staying focused and respectful during important moments.
Guardian of the Purse: You’ll hold onto important documents and items for the bride on the wedding day, such as the detail items, wedding license, and her driver’s license.
Make her Picture Perfect: Once she walks down the aisle take a moment to arrange the brides veil and train before the ceremony begins, so she looks amazing in all the pictures.
Flower Duty: To get her hands free you’ll hold the bridal bouquet during the ceremony.
Ring Bearer: If the ring bearer is too young to be trusted with those expensive bands, or there is no ring bearer, it’ll be your responsibility to keep track of the groom’s ring.
Witness: You’ll be one of the people to sign the marriage license as a witness after the I Do’s.
Speech Giver: During the reception you’ll have the opportunity to give a speech to honor the couple and personally congratulate them.
Party: Keep the party going during the evening and help the guests get onto the dance floor!
Feed the Bride: MAKE SURE THE BRIDE EATS AND DRINKS DURING THE WEDDING DAY. It’s easy to forget when she’s thinking about what’s coming. But there’s no passing out allowed! (Side note make sure YOU eat and drink as well, so YOU don’t pass out! Can’t support the bride if you’re out for the count!)
Hit Woman: As Maid of Honor, you are the designated wine spiller in case any unruly guests show up in white, or any ex’s tries to ruin the fun.
Details: But most importantly talk to your friend and the couple together to make sure everything they want handled at the end of the night is done. Such as saving the top tier of the cake, making sure the wedding dress is properly stored, or chasing down any important guests for pictures. That way the new couple can just enjoy their wedding day and relax.
