An armful of long-stemmed red roses or a cascading bouquet of sunflowers and daisies? Whatever your style, bouquets have been a tradition in weddings for centuries, and they continue to be a popular choice for brides today.
But why exactly do we carry bouquets on our wedding day? Let’s explore the history of the wedding bouquet and why it has become such an important part of the wedding tradition.
The origins of the wedding bouquet can be traced back to ancient times, when brides carried herbs and spices to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. In medieval times, brides would carry a bouquet of flowers to mask any unpleasant smells due to the weather or lack of bathing options and signify new beginnings. However, it wasn’t until the Victorian era that the wedding bouquet truly became a symbol of love and romance.
During the Victorian era, flowers were used to express emotions and convey secret messages. Different flowers had different meanings, and a bouquet could be used to express a range of emotions, from love and passion to friendship and gratitude. This tradition of using flowers to convey meaning and emotion was incorporated into the wedding tradition, and brides began carrying bouquets of flowers down the aisle as a symbol of love and devotion to their spouse. It was an easy, at a glance way, to show your future spouse how you were feeling about the wedding.
The type of flowers used in a wedding bouquet has also changed over time. In the past, brides would use local flowers and greenery that were readily available in their area. Today, brides have access to a wide variety of flowers from around the world and can choose from an endless array of colors and styles. Some brides go for traditional flowers like roses, while others choose more exotic blooms like orchids and peonies.
Some even opt out of live flowers entirely and choose to use long lasting wood or silk flowers instead! Which is a choice we highly recommend all brides consider!
In addition to being a symbol of love and romance, the wedding bouquet also serves practical purposes. Brides often carry bouquets to help them feel more comfortable and confident on their wedding day. Having all eyes on you can make any lady sweat! Holding a bouquet can give brides something to do with their hands and can help them feel more poised and elegant as they walk down the aisle. Additionally, a bouquet can add a pop of color and style to a bride’s wedding attire and can help tie the entire wedding theme together.
The wedding bouquet has also become a way for brides to express their personal style and creativity. From simple and understated bouquets to elaborate cascading arrangements, brides have a wide range of options when it comes to creating their perfect bouquet. Some brides even incorporate meaningful items into their bouquet, such as a locket with a picture of a loved one or a piece of jewelry that has been passed down through the family. There really is no limit to the creativity you can express!
While the bridal bouquet has evolved over time, it remains an important tradition in weddings today. It’s a way for brides to express their love and devotion to their spouse, as well as a way to add style and beauty to their wedding day. Whether you choose a simple bouquet of roses or an elaborate arrangement of exotic blooms, your wedding bouquet should reflect your personal style and the love you share with your partner.

Great article and so interesting!
How can you organize an outdoor wedding celebration that is comfortable and safe for guests of all ages, including children and the elderly?
We’re actually putting together another article about this topic right now! But the short answer is to keep them in mind when selecting your venue. If there are elderly guests or guests that use mobility aids, we suggest looking for venues that have one level, or elevators and ramps to help access the different parts of the venue. Venues with ceremony sites that include some sort of easy to walk pavement are also a plus! And for the kids, look for venues with a designated kid’s area (some we’ve seen even set up small playgrounds and petting zoos!) or have some small items like coloring books or toys available to help keep the kids entertained during the wedding!
